Innovate Your State Congratulates Winner of “Fix California Challenge” On Collecting 930,000 Signatures to Qualify Measure for November 2016 Ballot
CA Legislature Transparency Act will Make Government More Accountable
San Mateo, CA – Today Innovate Your State, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and encouraging public participation to improve government, congratulated the “Hold Politicians Accountable” committee on collecting more than 930,000 signatures for the “California Legislature Transparency Act,” an idea that was submitted to Innovate Your State’s Fix California Challenge and ultimately was one of the winners of the contest.
Tim Draper, founder of Innovate Your State, said “We applaud the proponents of the California Legislature Transparency Act for collecting enough signatures to qualify their winning idea for the November 2016 ballot. Our goal with the Fix California Challenge was to find ideas that would fix California’s governance challenges. This measure will help make government more accountable and responsive to the people it represents. I was pleased to contribute financially to the efforts and we look forward to the initiative’s qualification and, ultimately, voter approval.“
“The California Legislature Transparency Act” idea was submitted to the Fix California Challenge and seeks to implement a variety of open government reforms that will allow the press and public to easily access legislative information.
FixCal.org originally served as the platform for the nonprofit’s Fix California Challenge, a crowdsourcing contest with the intention of finding ideas on how to fix California’s governance problems. Over the course of the challenge, nearly 500 ideas, over 1,100 comments, and over 8,000 votes were submitted to the website. Four ideas submitted through the challenge stood out and have since received additional support, including the “California Legislature Transparency Act.”
In response to the success the Fix California Challenge, Innovate Your State recently decided to relaunch FixCal.org’s “submission” page and provide an ongoing platform for people to share their ideas and input on ways to improve the state. There will be no declared challenge winners, as there was when the site was first launched, but if a submitted idea meets the criteria, it may potentially receive funding and/or support from Innovate Your State or other backers.
The premise behind the relaunch of FixCal.org is that a “Venture Governance” approach will produce fresh, innovative ideas that effectively address the problems California faces, which include, but are not limited to: revenue uncertainty, a deteriorating education system, poor business climate, uneven economic growth, eroding public trust, and low voter turnout. Everyone’s participation is needed to fix the Golden State, and FixCal.org is a vehicle to do so.
