General Information
Welcome to the Innovate Your State sites and (collectively, the “Sites”), the websites and online services of Innovate Your State, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation (“IYS”). IYS knows that you care how information about you is used and shared. This privacy policy applies to the IYS services as well as related products and services, including without limitation the IYS services provided by the Sites (collectively, the “Service”). Any information you provide through may also be subject to IdeaScale’s Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.
IYS strives to conform its privacy practices, policies and/or procedures with any and all applicable international, country specific, US Federal, state and/or local laws, codes, regulations, and requirements and the industry codes, standards and regulations of various market and opinion research professional associations and/or organizations, including without limitation the ICC/ESOMAR International Code on Market and Social Research and the Code of Standards and Ethics for Survey Research of the Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO).  IYS is committed to protecting the security and integrity of all personal information collected by or disclosed to IYS. IYS will not use any personal information for direct marketing or advertising purposes and participation is completely voluntary. This privacy policy identifies the personal information that IYS collects; how such personal information will be used and protected; and your rights.
Information Collection
IdeaScale Registration
In order to submit your information and ideas to IYS using this site, you must first complete the registration form and create a username and password through the Sites. During registration you are required to give contact information (including email address).


If you make a donation, we request certain personally identifiable information from you on our donation form. You must provide contact information (such as name and billing address) and financial information (such as credit card number and expiration date). We use this information for billing purposes. If we have trouble processing a donation, we will use this information to contact you. For example, we may send email confirmations of billing transactions, account upgrades, and account cancellations. We may use third-party payment processing companies to bill you for donations. These companies do not retain, share, store or use personally identifiable information for any other purposes.


IP Address

IYS may also collect the Internet protocol address (the IP address) that is publicly available on your computer. The IP address is not collected for the purpose of tracking or monitoring your activity on the Internet. In non-United States jurisdictions an IP address may be classified as personal information or personal data under applicable laws; therefore, to the extent that IYS collects IP addresses, IYS will collect, use, maintain, secure and/or disclose IP addresses in accordance with applicable laws.

You provide us information about yourself, such as your name and e-mail address, or if you register for an account on the Sites (including by “following,” “liking,” linking your account to the Sites, on a third party website or network). If you correspond with us by email, we may retain the content of your email messages, your email address and our responses. We may also retain any messages you send through the Sites. You may provide us information in user content you post to the Sites.


We may also store information that we collect through user input, cookies, log files, and user forms to create a 'profile' of preferences. This profile information includes each of the following categories, together with nonexclusive examples of data we may collect under each category:


-       Registration: username, password, first name, last name, email address, phone

-       Donation: credit card number, credit card expiration, billing address

-       Preferences: profile information that categorizes how the software is utilized


Following termination or deactivation of your IYS account, IYS may retain your profile information and user content for a reasonable time for archival purposes. Furthermore, IYS may retain and continue to use indefinitely all information (including user content) contained in your communications to other users or posted to public or semi-public areas of the Sites after termination or deactivation of your account.

IYS reserves the right, but has no obligation, to monitor the user content posted on the Sites. We reserve the right to remove any such information or material for any reason or no reason, including without limitation if in our sole opinion such information or material violates, or may violate, any applicable law or to protect or defend our rights or property or those of any third party. IYS also reserves the right to remove information upon the request of any third party.

Communications from the Sites 
Ongoing Communications
We will occasionally send you information on enhancements to the Service and updates. These communications are designed to educate our users. Out of respect for your privacy, we present the option not to receive these types of communications. Please see 'Choice and Opt-out' below.

Service-related Announcements
We will send you strictly service-related announcements when it is necessary to do so. For instance, if the Service is temporarily suspended for maintenance, we might send you an email. Service-related emails are also sent confirming billing transactions, account upgrades, and account cancellations.
Generally, you may not opt-out of these communications, which are not promotional in nature. If you do not wish to receive them, you have the option to cancel your account.
Information Sharing and Disclosure 
Personally Identifiable Information Sharing with Partners 
Any personal information or content that you voluntarily disclose for posting to the Sites, such as user content, becomes available to the public, as controlled by any applicable privacy or website customization settings. If you remove information that you posted to the Sites, copies may remain viewable in cached and archived pages, or if other users have copied or saved that information. We do not share any personally identifiable information with any third parties except as indicated below.
IYS uses the NationBuilder platform to organize our community of members, supporters and prospects. You can read more about that company and its features and polices at When you visit, NationBuilder may send one or more cookies - a small text file containing a string of alphanumeric characters - to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser and lets NationBuilder help you log in faster and enhance your navigation through A cookie does not collect personal information about you. A persistent cookie remains on your hard drive after you close your browser. Persistent cookies may be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the Sites. Persistent cookies can be removed by following your web browser’s directions. A session cookie is temporary and disappears after you close your browser. You can reset your web browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features of may not function properly if the ability to accept cookies is disabled. IYS uses Google Analytics to help understand use of the Sites. This service collects the information sent by your browser as part of a web page request, including cookies and your IP address, and their use of it is governed by their Privacy Policy.


If a user specifically requests a service from one of our partnering companies, including, but not limited to, IdeaScale, the user’s personally identifying information will be shared. The partnering company may contact them directly regarding their inquiry. Any requests of partnering companies are initiated solely by the user and it will be clearly indicated that a partnering company offers the requested service.

We reserve the right to disclose your personally identifiable information as required by law and when we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights and/or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process.
Choice and Opt-out
If you no longer wish to receive our email updates, you may opt-out of receiving them by following the instructions included in each update email.
Access to Personally Identifiable Information
If your personally identifiable information changes, or if you no longer desire the Service, you may update or cancel your account at any time by logging in to your account. Options for updating your profile and account cancellations are available there.
IYS cares about the integrity and security of your personal information. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to IYS or guarantee that your information on the service may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards. Your privacy settings may also be affected by changes to the functionality of third-party providers, such as social networks. IYS is not responsible for the functionality or security measures of any third party.


To protect your privacy and security, we take reasonable steps (such as requesting a unique password) to verify your identity before granting you access to your account. You are responsible for maintaining the secrecy of your unique password and account information, and for controlling access to your email communications from IYS, at all times. 


Compromise of Personal Information

In the event that personal information is compromised as a result of a breach of security, IYS will promptly notify those persons whose personal information has been compromised, in accordance with the notification procedures set forth in this Privacy Policy, or as otherwise required by applicable law.


Children's Privacy

Protecting the privacy of young children is especially important. For that reason, IYS does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 13 or knowingly allow such persons to register for accounts. If you are under 13, please do not send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address. Changes in this Privacy Statement
If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post those changes to this privacy statement and other places we deem appropriate so that you are aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it. We reserve the right to modify this privacy statement at any time, so please review it frequently. If we make material changes to this policy, we will notify you here, by email, or by means of a notice on our homepage.
